Braking is one of the most important things you’ll learn to do on a motorcycle. First, you need to receive lessons on how braking works and even when you did receive lessons in braking, it is advisable to keep practising in riding and use your technique to stop your bike in slow down or in emergency stop.

There are some frequently asked questions and our suggestions:

1: Which brake is the most effective, front or rear brake ?

The front brake is the most effective, offering approximately 70% of a motorcycle’s total braking power, this is because most of the weight of the bike and rider transfers forward onto the front wheel when the brakes are applied. Motorcyclists who chooses not to use his front brake, or does not have the experience or training to use and modulate the front brake of his motorcycle in an emergency, may be abandoning 70% of the motorcycle’s braking capacity and mostly falling over this bike.

2: Should I use the front, rear brake… or both?

Balance is crucial to a motorcycle’s dynamics, and that’s why most bikes have individual front and rear brake controls.Most experts agree that roughly 70% of braking effort should go to the front wheel (which uses the hand lever on the right grip), and 30% to the rear (which is operated by the right foot pedal.) Front brakes require more effort because weight transfer from slowing down will shift the bike’s balance from the rear wheel to the front, enabling the front tire to handle more load.

3: How to brake in an emergency ?

For a real emergency stop, you can better leave the rear brake for what it is, and only use the front brake. Why no rear brake ? Because t is very difficult not to slam the rear brake in an emergency situation, and especially to let the rear brake go in time. If your muscles get tense in such a situation, the tendency is to push the rear brake hard with your foot. That will result in a locked rear wheel. If you are lucky, it will slide from left to right and back, and if you are less lucky, the rear wheel will move passed the front wheel. In an emergency situation, you don't want that. That's the reason for the advice not to touch the rear brake in an emergency stop. As a bonus, the bike will stay upright, because the rear wheel will keep turning. A turning wheel has resistance to move sideways.
